{date night with the hubby}

As part of Ryan's birthday present, Alexis decided to give us a date night. And the best part? The kids spent the night! They were excited about tonight all week long. Ryan and I hit the outlet mall after Alexis picked them up, and then we went to The Vintage for dinner. It was a great time:

{birthday dinner}

Ryan was feeling a little better tonight, so we headed out to West End Pizza for dinner to celebrate his birthday with Pam, Dick, Danny, Samantha, Stella, Alexis, the kiddos, and me. We had a nice time. I wanted to get a nice pic of us, but Caden was not in the picture taking mood. Here is the best shot we were able to get:
What a goof...

{Happy Birthday, Ryan!!!}

Today is Ryan's 34th birthday. Unfortunately, he is pretty sick with a cold. We ordered in some dinner, and he ended up going to bed early. Not too exciting :) Here is a cute pic of him today from work:

{Sherlock Holmes...a good read!}

The other day at work my students had a reading period, and I forgot my book at home. Now I have a ton of books in my room, so I knew I just needed to grab one from my shelf. I buy books all of the time at rummage sales and Goodwill to bring into my classroom, so I have not read them all. The one that hit me to grab this week was a Sherlock Holmes collected by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
 I do not teach any Doyle, and the only thing I've really read in the past was The Hound of the Baskervilles.

I sat down with the book and didn't really know what to expect. I thought back to our trip to Scotland as I opened the book. I walked a lit tour that included where Doyle spent a lot of his time. From the second page of the book I was hooked. I LOVE it! Holmes' character is so great and funny. The book is really easy to read, because it is a collection of short stories. It is so relaxing to just read for fun. I really hope by having this time in class for my students to read, they will develop this life-long love for reading.

{spoiled grandkids}

Grandma and Bumpah decided they are going to get rid of some of the toys at their house. This, of course, meant that Grandma let them each pick out something new for the house :)

{relaxing day...}

After the crazy end of the school week we had, it was nice to have a relaxing day today. The kids were up around 7:30, and we had some Disney pancakes I made in a little pancake iron thing I have. They appeared to like them, especially William :) After breakfast Ryan took Lilli to gymnastics:
while the boys stayed at home and played. Once Lilli got back they all wanted to play with blocks. Andrew and Caden played with Legos:
Silly faces!
And Lilli and William played with Duplos:
Silly faces!
Grandma and Bumpah picked the boys up before lunch, so Ryan, the kids and I headed to Green Bay to go to Costco. It was very relaxing to not really have anywhere we needed to be.

Gotta love days like this!

{Baby Stella time!}

We were lucky enough to get to hang out with Baby Stella for several hours today. To say Lilli was excited is definitely an understatement... We started out with some story time:
Lilli chose some "baby books" she thought Stella would like:
Lilli helped with diaper changes and feedings. What a great helper she was! She especially loved the Pack N Play being put up. At one point she even sat in there with Stella to play with her.

I can't say I minded it too much either when Stella was ready for a nap :)

{sleepover time}

The kids were super excited tonight, because Andrew and William slept over! We thought the boys could use some fun after their emotional time yesterday with the funeral. The kids had a great time! Unfortunately Ryan and I didn't think to take pics :(

Ryan slept in the living room with the boys after they finished watching The Lego Movie. Lilli was a tired girl and fell asleep on the couch around 7 pm :) Here are some pics from earlier in the day at Grandma and Bumpah's house. Enjoy!
On their way to Eagle River :)

{crazy, busy night}

There were many things going on at the same time tonight. Ryan was supposed to pick the kiddos up from Aunt Chris tonight by 5, but he got held up with an emergency at the office. (Aunt Chris had the kids because Grandma and Bumpah were at a funeral. Sadly, Uncle Jordon's maternal grandmother Ramona Bricco, who raised him as her child, passed away last weekend. She was such a great lady. Here is a link to Ramona's beautiful obituary.) I had a meeting at school from 3:45-5:15, but I luckily got done early. I had to rush home to get the kids so I could get Caden to hockey by 6 pm. I was able to grab the kids from Chris' house at 5:30 pm, which left me with pretty much no wiggle room. In the meantime Ryan got done at work, so he was able to get to the Y before us and pick up Caden's ice skates (which we dropped off last week to be sharpened). I pulled up to the Y at 5:57 pm (again, class started at 6 pm), and the kids ran out of the van and to Ryan who was waiting inside. I then high-tailed it over to A Touch of Class Pet Resort to pick Minka up from daycare, which was closing at 6:30 pm. After all of that I got home around 6:20 pm, and I realized I had planned on leftovers for dinner, but we didn't have too much in the refrigerator. After quickly debating whether or not to order pizza, I decided to check to see what I could throw together. I threw chicken into the microwave to defrost, and I set up the dipping stations to bread some chicken pieces. I found a jar of pasta sauce in the cabinet, a container of mini mozzarella balls with about 15 left in it, a half of container of Romano cheese, and a bag of gluten free macaroni noodles. And that was how it was decided we would have a Chicken Parmesanish dinner. I also threw a bag of frozen peas in the microwave once I had the chicken in the oven. By cutting the chicken into pretty small pieces, I had the entire thing done from first pulling the chicken out of the freezer to plates on the table in just under one hour. Not too bad! We still ate later than I wanted, but it was much healthier than pizza. Man! I am tired again just from typing this! Here is a quick shot of the chicken:

{Lilli, our little teacher}

Ryan sent me this video yesterday while I was at work. My little teacher:
I also love the other day when Caden to me. "You know, Mama. You're a teacher, so you know everything." Let's see how long he keeps thinking that :)

On the sickness front, we are much better in our house. I was able to go to work today :) My throat is pretty sore now, but I am much better. Both of the kiddos are still battling colds, but things are on the upswing. Let's now hope that Ryan will stay healthy.

{sleepy day...}

I woke up this morning pretty early, because #1: I didn't feel great and #2: Lilli wanted to climb into our bed. Because Caden was already in there (and we only have a queen-size bed), there wasn't much room left. I took a shower and then realized I didn't feel too great. I actually had to blow my hair dry while I sat down. I ended up lying down and taking about a 20 minute nap before leaving for school. I realized the inevitable...I wasn't able to get through having two sick kids and not getting it this time... I didn't have things set up for a sub at school, so I decided to head into school to set things up and then head home. And that's exactly what I did. I ended up sleeping from 9:30-3:30 straight through! When I feel asleep Minka was next to my bed on the floor. When I woke up...she was still there:
Caden didn't go to school either. He was with Grandma and Bumpah, who then picked up and kept Lilli as well until around 4:30 when they dropped them off. I am feeling much better, but I am still not at 100%. Now everyone keep their fingers crossed that Ryan is able to sneak through without getting it!

Until later!

{it hits Caden...}

No hockey for Caden tonight. He had a bad headache and a fever. Looks like it is working its way through the house now :( Tonight consisted of snuggles on the couch and watching Night at the Museum. Great movie if you haven't seen it before. Lilli loves it purely because Dick Van Dyke is in it. Gotta love that!

{a day of skiing for Caden}

Lilli was still a little under the weather, so she and Mama hung out at home after church. Ryan and Caden headed to Nordic Mountain for some skiing. Caden decided he wanted to do that instead of watch the Packers' game. That was a wise choice :( Check out the cute pic he sent to me:
He also sent me these videos:
We definitely have a kid who loves skiing. Hopefully next time Lilli will be able to go as well.

{Ninja Turtle Cake + Lilli update}

I was able to finish the Ninja Turtle cake this morning. Here is what it looked like after I scratched the design into the main frosting layer with a toothpick:
Here was the end result for the top:
Here is a side view:
The back of the cake had "COWABUNGA" written across it. Not my best cake, but I didn't have as much time to work on the smoothness as I normally have. Lilli was up quite a few times throughout the night, and then I was up with her for the day at 5:30 am. Lucky Mama! I must say I do love the extra snuggles:
She was much better after about 9, but then she started to feel sick again around 12:30. Then this evening she was doing better again. She enjoyed some snuggles from Daddy before bed:
We are really hoping she is better tomorrow. She was disappointed she couldn't go to gymnastics this morning, and I know she will not be happy about having to miss Sunday School tomorrow... Oh, well. It is what it is!

{sick Lilli = not much done}

I had plans to do quite a bit tonight, but Lilli still isn't feeling too great. Unfortunately, we think she has croup again. Definitely has that telltale cough :( I am making a Ninja Turtle cake for my friend's son's birthday party tomorrow, so at least I got the cake baked and the layers put together with the crumb coat over them.

Most of the evening was spent sitting on the coach with Lilli. She wanted to watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, so I can't complain :) I also got to run to Target by myself to pick up a few things. Mommy vacation! Other than that, not too much to report. Oh, I did get one of our kitchen cabinets cleared out. That's something! I guess I should give myself some credit.

{hockey + sick Lilli}

Today is Thursday, so that means hockey! Caden was working on balancing one leg. I only took one video, because I was holding Lilli on my lap, so I couldn't move around a lot:
He was a little frustrated at the end of class, because he wasn't able to do everything he wanted. He couldn't do the slide stop the way his coach was showing. The coach talked with me after class, and we determined that we needed to get his skates sharpened again. A dad also told me that he thought Caden's skates may be too large. I need to look that up online.

Lilli was not feeling great tonight. We stopped home for 15 minutes before hockey, and here is what she looked like:
 It didn't get much better when we got there:
Then this:
And this:
And finally this:
Ryan was able to swing by after Rotary and pick her up. She slept for the rest of the night. Poor thing. I think she is getting another cold :( This time of year is horrible for that. Send healthy wishes her way!

{Fifth Element concert}

Caden and Daddy headed over to the Alberta Kimbell Auditorium at West High School to see the acapella group Fifth Element, out of UW-Eau Claire, perform a concert tonight at 7 pm. The group came to his school today, and he was REALLY excited to be able to see their show. Lilli was a pretty tired girl, so the boys headed to the concert while Lilli fell asleep and Mama worked on grading some papers. Here are a couple of pics of my boys:
Here is also a video of the group performing last year for a local news program:

{video for Baby Stella from Lilli}

Over the weekend Baby Stella wasn't feeling well, so Lilli decided to send her a message. Check out what she sent:
I know that Lilli is wearing a bathing suit. She was pretending to swim in blankets in our living room :)

My brother then sent me this video of Baby Stella watching Lilli's message, and then sending one of her own. I laughed out loud:
How cute was that?!

{no cavities + fearless defenders...}

Both of the kiddos and I had our teeth cleaned today. I am happy to report we are all part of the No Cavity Club. I didn't get a cute certificate though :)
Check out the pic Caden took of Lilli while he was with her in her room:
I was almost done and I could hear him talking to her. He was concerned she wouldn't be happy without me in the room, so he said, "I'll just go wait with her until you are done." What a sweet big brother :)

Tonight while Caden was a hockey with Bumpah, I had the privilege of hanging out at home with Lilli and William. While I was finishing up dinner, they decided to play a little dress up. I had nothing to fear with these two in the house:
All of the kids are super excited for Grandma to get back into town tonight. She has been in California with Aunt Linda since last Thursday. They miss her. I know Bumpha does as well :)

{cold weather solution}

With all of the cold weather we have been having, the kids have been complaining about their aces hurting when we go outside. So Caden asked me to make him another hat that will cover his face. I looked at Pinterest for some ideas, and then I came up with my own. I made it as simple as possible. The entire thing is worked with half double crochets. There are three ways the kids can wear them. Over their faces:
Over their faces but pulled under their chins (which Caden decided made him look like a knight):
And the last way is just flipped up:
I will work to get pics of Lilli in hers as well. She wasn't in the photo mood today :)

{gymnastics starts again}

Lilli was thrilled Daddy was able to go with us to gymnastics this morning. The next session began today, and Lilli has a new teacher, Coach Zach. She took to him right away and didn't even hesitate to go in. I was truly shocked. She did a great job! Here are some videos I took:
Lilli loves doing this little circuit:
She also practiced balancing with a bean bag on her head while she walked on the taller beam:

{lunch time routine:napkin notes}

We let Caden buy hot lunch at school one day a week. The other days he takes his lunch in his R2D2 lunch bag. He generally wants PB&J every day. The one thing he looks forward to the most is his napkin. Daddy and Mommy take turns preparing his lunch, which always includes drawing a pic on his napkin with a little message. Here are a few from his lunches this week:
Pete the Cat
Ninja Turtles
Some mornings (or nights before) are much easier than others to come up with ideas. We always try to make it something he will really enjoy.

{more hockey fun + dirty diaper}

Today is Thursday, so once again that means hockey night! I didn't take any photos this time, but I did take a short video:
Of course when I filmed is when Caden had a couple balance checks. He was FLYING around the rink. The smile on his face was precious. He loves going so fast.

After hockey we headed home. It was a leftovers night, so we did a pretty good job of clearing out the fridge. After dinner when we were in the living room, Lilli had Daddy hold her baby for her. That was when Daddy realized the baby needed her diaper changed. Normally a dirty diaper isn't such a great event, but when you have a Baby Alive, it is amazing. Lilli has been waiting for this baby to need a diaper change for about two days. She was THRILLED. She especially loves to change the baby's diaper because I gave her a pack of real wipes to use. Take a look:

What a good mommy :) Notice she even strapped the baby in so she wouldn't fall off of the changing pad?

{cold day + delicious recipe}

Today was bitterly cold, so I didn't have school today :) Here is a shot of the temp from my phone:
Lilli was done with school at 10:25, so it's not like I had a ton of time at home before my little ones started to rejoin me. Happily Ryan didn't have patients today, so I did get to spend some nice time with him as well.

Ryan and the kids had some fun playing Pictureka:
Lilli didn't quite make it all afternoon:
I will leave you with a recipe I tried for the first time Tuesday for dinner. Ryan found it and thought it looked good. It was great! I can even say it was kid-approved, especially the meatball part. So if you are looking for a new recipe to add to your arsenal, try this one. I am including a pic from the recipe, because I forgot to take one last night. Click the pic and it will take you to the recipe!

Here is that video of Caden from hockey last night. He is soooo much better than he was before. I think he is excited also that he can tell how much he has improved. He even does some one-legged skating. Enjoy!

{The Return of Hockey!}

Caden started hockey again tonight. I am amazed by how fast he can now go. His confidence has improved a ton as well. Here are some shots:
Here's one of his crazy fans:
I will try to upload a video tomorrow!
